Sahagun- halfway there and still walkin

Sorry it has been so long since we have posted. we are fine, thanks to everyone for their emails and concerns. as one brazilian that we met said, we have been going from no where to no place. Yesterday we walked 24 miles from a tiny town called Itera to a tiny town called Carrion. not too much in between. We have walked thru what they call the meseta, which is a mostly flat plateau with softly rolling hills on either side. Mostly what i will remember is that spain is one big rock broken up into a million pieces that can turn your ankle in a hearbeat, where the wind blows so hard it will knock you into the freshly plowed field, that by the way smells like pooh, and the mud cakes thick onto your boots after a cold nights rain, but the best thing we will remember are the fellow perigrinos that come in and out of your time here, their smiles encouraging when you think you can´t make another step. we have come so far, travelled such varied terrain and today passed the halfway point in a town known for the knights of templar. (they all seem to claim that fame)Not much their and we passed thru in 2 seconds.
We had a couple of pretty tough days this last week and if either of us where doing this alone we would have quite miles and days ago. The cold rain has tried to break our spirit, Dwight lost his third leg, his beloved walking stick, I broke mine, which he in turn cut his finger trying to fix and this all after falling down a flight of stairs in some old church in a town so many days ago i am not sure where it was. But I know it was after we had clean clothes, which we no longer do and I do remember the Pilgrims that were running that particular auberque we´re the nicest we have encountered. So with the bad comes the good. We are thankful when we have a hot meal at the end of the day for we never know what awaits us in the next town if there is a next town. We are learning that to not follow "the way" can lead to wrong turns and uninvited distractions. Sometimes it feels like we are following the yellow brick road, except it is yellow arrows and at the end we wonder what we will find behind the curtain. But we know it´s the journey not the destination, so we go out of our way to talk to perigrinos who are strangers only at first and they are the ones who keep us going. no sense in wasting time speculating if they want to talk to us or not. They are us, and need the same encouragement. It has been difficult here, not knowing the language, and the Spanish people are very closed, so we smile, say hola and go about our way hoping we leave something good behind. Our time here is good and finally we have found our momentum. We will be in Leon in two days so we hope to post then. Please send email......we miss you!!!
