What is The Camino?
The Camino, Spanish for road, is in fact several roads, a journey, a path which never ends but you are forever changed. In
2004, 179,944 people walked, biked, or rode horseback the popular Camino Frances, ending at the medieval shrine city of Santiago de Compostela, where the bones of Jesus’ apostle James are believed to be buried. They all have their own stories and their own reasons for taking four weeks to months out of their busy, often sedentary lives to walk the 500 mile stony ever-changing path across Northern Spain. Some do so for religious reasons, some just for the adventure and for others they don’t really know why they take those first steps at St Jean Pied de Port. One of the roads to Santiago, the ancient route Camino Frances, has been traveled for more than 1100 years. For 500 miles this path winds through old Spanish towns, starting from St. Jean Pied de Port in the Pyrenees to the Galicean city of Santiago de Compostela. There are five other routes, but the French one is the most well-known and marked all along the path with yellow arrows, refugios (hostels specially created for the Camino), and images of scalloped shells to prompt the pilgrim along the journey. Not only will it be challenging physically and emotionally, it will also be an adventure that goes beyond our personal motivations. With this journey we hope to raise the consciousness of the American presence on the Camino and at the same time use it as a tool to raise money for Lyrics for Life, a non profit organization supporting children’s cancer charities. For us, it is the love of the adventure, spiritually a need to be more in tune with the universe that surrounds us, and a desire to enrich our own community by expanding it beyond the personal level. Stay tuned to our travel blogs, we will keep you updated on our journey and from here you can support us by donating to Lyrics for Life.
